The bandwidth-driven Mott transition differs fundamentally from more familiar examples of quantum phase transitions because it does not require a symmetry distinction between the two phases. Its existence and many characteristic features have recently been studied in several new platforms, including so-called kappa-organics (“spin liquid materials”), two-dimensional electron systems in semiconductors, as well as the transition-metal dichalcogenide moiré bilayers. In this talk we will review the universal features of the Mott point which arise from these studies and compare this phenomenology to recent theory work. We specifically discuss in detail the impact of disorder on various regimes around the Mott point, outlining several interesting directions for future work, concerning the interplay of disorder and strong correlations in a variety of physical systems.
