Istraživanja u području površinske fizike obuhvaćaju eksperimentalna i teorijska istraživanja.
Glavni smjerovi istraživanja uključuju:
- istraživanje strukturnih i elektronskih svojstava čistih površina, ultratankih slojeva i poduprtih nano struktura
- istraživanje efekta “ograničenja” elektrona u malim česticama i niskodimenzionalnim sistemima – stanja kvantnih jama
- strukture i elektronska svojstva stepeničastih (vicinalnih) površina i nanostruktura nastalih na njima
- strukturnih i elektronskih svojstava grafena na dobro definiranim površinama
Teorijska istraživanja su fokusirana na istraživanje:
- dinamike elektronskih pobuđenja na femtosekundnoj skali
- dinamike atomskih i molekularnih stupnjeva slobode u nanosistemima
- interakcija između pobuđenih stupnjeva slobode u nanosistemima, te dekoherencije kvantnih stanja nanosistema uzrokovane intrinsičnim interakcijama ili interakcijama s okolinom
